Why Sci-Fi?

A good science fiction is a story that balances what the audience knows; and what the audience doesn't know, in order for the viewers to understand it. We have Sci-Fi today for ENTERTAINMENT. Sci-Fi movie makers along with writers have a need for exaggerating science. It all starts with the question...What if? What if somewhere in the near future, robots will carry out our daily life chores? What if a plague takes place on Earth, and turns everyone into ferocious beasts? These questions have the potential to create a storyline with a plot, that seems entirely too impossible to overcome. Sci-Fi arouses different emotions in the audience, with its unpredictable surprises.

When I think of Sci-Fi, aliens, lazer guns, and all of these most talked topics arouse in my head. With all of them popping in my head, I have found that there are different forms of Sci-Fi. Technology plays a big role in science fiction these days. Movies that are commendable of such work are Wall-E, Star Trek, the Matrix, Transformers, etc. Animators can have fun with technology in movies. The different sounds each gadget makes can actually set the mood for the audience. An example would have to be from Transformers. Every robot has it's own sound as it transforms in and out of car mode. In disney pixar's movie, Wall-E, each robot also has its own way of communicating, mainly pixelated voices.

What makes a sci-fi a sci-fi? Well for one, I can tell you that ever science fiction created has its own breakthrough. Breakthroughs are new creations that is well surrounded by the storyline. In I Am Legend, the breakthrough was the vaccine. Unfortunately everyone who took the vaccine ended up turning into diseased monsters. The main characters in the story each have a contribution to how the breakthrough affects them.

The challenges of making a Sci-Fi movie is making sure that the audience is capable of keeping up with the story. Losing the audience at a peak of the story is the last thing science fictions creators want. There has to be that special balance that teaches the audience the new information, and at the same time the audience has to have an understanding or a reference that they can go to during reading or watching a sci-fi story.

  1. 1st paragraph- I like how you see Sci-Fi as Entertainment as rather other people see it for education purposes and such. When you write 'what the audience knows and doesnt know in order for the viewer to understand it" I'm not very sure what you mean by this but instead of the word understand I'd use a word lure because when the audience thinks they know whats going on but they dont it sort of luring them into the movie or book. Did that make any sense? I sure hope it did.
The last sentence is a little vague what type of emotions? & what type of surprises?

2nd Paragraph- Everytime i write something you could imrpove on for this paragraph i look back at your paragraph and find that it makes sense and nothings wrong. I'm not sure there something I have to say about it but I just can't write it down because its hard for me to put it into words. I like this pargraph but i think it could be elaborated just tiny bit more.

3rd paragraph- The second and third sentences are most definitely true and are well put together. Last sentence once again (haha, laugh with me) how does the breakthrough affect the main characters? have all of them taken the vaccine? Think of it as if a person reading this has not watched the movie so you could better explain it.

4th paragraph- very edgy, i like how you end with challenge rather than ending on a positive note. This paragraph just seems like another aspect we would look for in a scifi. I was wondering if this was your conclusion if so maybe you could include an ending product of how sci fi has influenced you or something like that or however you'd like to end it.

I hope this helped alot. Good luck!!!

  2. Isabelle ! (:

Introduction : I agree with brittany about "what the audience knows and doesnt know in order for the viewer to understand it" i didn't quite understand that. I totally agree that sci-fi today is used for entertainment. What i like most about your introduction, is that you used a simple question like "WHAT IF" as an example to make a good sci-fi.

Body : You did a good job on explaining what makes a good sci-fi and that technology takes a big role in science fiction. I liked that you used movies and scenes from movies as examples. But what i would recommend is to explain the good and bad consequences of each example you put down. For example you mentioned that in the movie I AM LEGEND, everyone who took the vaccine turned into diseased monsters. You never gave a positive consequence of that movie. you need to elaborate just a little bit more.

conclusion: this paragraph is good and well written. You talked about that the challenges of making a Sci-Fi movie is making sure that the audience is capable of keeping up with the story and that it teaches them new info. That is totally true. But i kind of agree with brittany, you should add how sci-fi has influenced you to end up your essay. Other than that, i think you did good. You just need to add positive consequences to your examples and elaborate a little bit more.

Good luck on your final draft isabelle ! (:

  3. Hi Isabelle,
You've got some interesting ideas here, but I think you might need to work a bit more on ideas and organization. I think your teammates were getting at that when they talked about elaborating more and asked questions about your conclusion.
Your thesis seems to be that good sci fi is balanced between known and unknown. That would work fine, but it is not supported that clearly in the body of the essay.
Each body paragraph should look at a different aspect of that balance and should draw upon examples from *both* movies and books/stories.
You would also need to relate this back to your statement that the main purpose is entertainment, showing how maintaining that idea balance between known and unknown is entertaining :)
