Journal #25

Assessed Vocabulary
I believe my vocabulary is fair. My strongest points for vocabulary would have to be adjectives for action verbs, along with verbs themselves. I enjoy describing the replaying moments in my head, in various ways to make my writing come to life. My weakest point for vocabulary is finding the right word to use. Since I am not very persistent on exercising vocabulary, I lack knowledge of words.

Learning Experience
Back in elementary and middle school, I learned vocabulary by writing down words with their definitions that the teacher assigned. We also had workbooks that were filled with techniques of learning vocabulary, such as "fill in the blank"/ "true or false". There would be a certain genre of words in each chapter, such as "latin roots", homonyms, and homophones. After every chapter, my ability to pickup vocabulary would be assessed by a test. Every 5 chapters, there would be another test that my teachers could use to examine my ability to remember the vocabulary I have learned in the previous chapters.

Personally Learning Words
I learn words by everyday activities like watching the news, or by reading books. I would pick up a dictionary when reading a book, and asking my parents, "Mom what does that word mean?". My goals for this semester is to not have to not have the dictionary/thesaurus 24/7. I want to be able to feel confident when writing an essay, and communicating with people. I want to be able to pick up words easily, and be able to remember them.

  1. Hi Isabelle,
Nice job on assessing your vocabulary learning and habits. Good point about learning vocabu as you hear it on the news, etc. That is really the best way to learn...to be aware of language and to want to learn new words :)
